Summary
The tomato chlorophyll mutantxantha 5 (derived from variety ‘Condine Red’) was used to examine the effects of temperature, duration of light, light intensity and N-nutrition on dry matter yield and chlorophyll content. The results were as follows:
-
1.
The dry matter yield of the mutant and the control became increased up to 100% with temperature increases from 15/18–25/28 °C or extension of light exposition from 9–18 hours.
-
2.
The chlorophyll content of the plants was found to be higher with a temperature of 25/28 °C in comparison with 15/18 °C. Doubling the duration of light had no effect on chlorophyll content within the range 15/18 °C. A significant increase of the chlorophyll content in the mutant and in the control by prolonged light exposition (18 hours) was found only with temperature of 25/28 °C.
-
3.
A more drastic reduction of the chlorophyll content of the mutant in comparison with the control was observed under daylight conditions. In spite of this chlorophyll breakdown by high light intensity the dry matter yield of the mutant increased up to 60%.
-
4.
The chlorophyll content of the control increased at low (15/18 °C) and high (25/28 °C) temperature by addition of nitrogen, whereas the chlorophyll content of the mutant only increased when the temperature was 25/28 °C.
