Abstract
The optical characteristics of the ridge weak absorptive dielectric waveguide are analysed by using both the equivalent index method and the differentiation method. The approximate expressions are derived for calculating the mode loss coefficients. The computations are carried out for SiO2/GaAs/AlGaAs waveguides. It is shown that the method given in this paper is very accurate, and the results computed by this method are in good agreement with the numerical results of the mode complex eigenvalue equations.
