TRIC agent isolated from trachoma patients in India

Abstract

Three strains of TRIC agent were isolated in embryonated eggs from 82 patients with clinical trachoma. These strains fixed complement with Psittacosis-Lymphogranuloma-Trachoma group-specific antiserum.

Thirty percent of the conjunctival smears from trachoma patients showed the presence of characteristic Halberstaedter-Prowazek intracytoplasmic inclusion bodies. Only 10% of the sera from these patients fixed complement with trachoma antigens.

It seems that smear examination of the conjunctiva is still preferable for the laboratory diagnosis of this disease. The results of virus isolation and viral serology are disappointing.
