Abstract

An experimental model of pharmaco-perfusion lung scanning following an intravenous injection of aminophylline and99mTc-Human Albumin Microspheres (99mTc-HAM) using a gamma camera and a computer system is described.

The effect of unilateral artificial occlusion of the main bronchus on the perfusion of a hemi lung was studied in 6 healthy volunteers. The average perfusion ratio between both hemi lungs of 50.2 : 49.8 was altered by unilateral occlusion of the main bronchus to 32.7 : 67.3 in favour of the nonoccluded hemi lung. Intravenous administration of 0.48 g aminophylline changes the ratio to 42.8 : 57.2 (p<0.02), corresponding to the increase in the perfusion of blocked hemi lung for the third part of the base value. The applicability of this experimental model for pretreatment assessment of the lung perfusion in patients with bronchial carcinoma in order to distinguish the reversible alveolar hypoxia from reduction of regional perfusion due to tumorous invasion of vessel is discussed.
