Summary
It is assumed by Henckel (1956, 1964 etc.) that soaking and redrying of seeds or caryopses, respectively, before sowing do induce a physiological change (“hardening”) of the plants growing later on. This should be combined with characteristic changes in the intensity in metabolic processes above all concerning the activity of some enzymes. We have checked some of these statements by investigation of cereals grown from seeds pretreated by Henckel's method under the climatic conditions of Middle Europe.
With increasing time of soaking before redrying and sowing the germination rate of seeds has been reduced. In comparison with plants resulting from pretreated seeds the controls showed a slightly promoted growth. An increase of water content as well as of osmotic value in resulting (“hardened”) plants, as said by Henckel, we could not confirm. From the only very small differences between the transpiration rate of plants grown from “hardened” and untreated caryopses it is not possible to conclude upon a different degree of hardiness. In general in comparison with the controls the oxygen uptake of plants from caryopses exposed to a pre-sowing treatment was diminished. Also an increased respiration of resulting plants induced by seed treatment was not provable. An increased activity of the enzymes investigated we could not find neither in treated caryopses nor in seedlings or plants of different age grown from them. In general the pre-sowing treatment had a negative influence on the activity of amylase, phosphatase, catalase, and peroxidase. The content of high energy di- and triphosphates, possibly taking park in induction of frost resistance, showed a slight increase in pretreated caryopses, but this increase was not approximately as high as after direct cold treatment of plants. Our investigations have not shown any signs that the pre-sowing seed treatment by Henckel's method does induce a persistant hardiness of plants.
