Summary
Papaver nudicaule (sect.Scapiflora) described by Linné is a South- Siberian species which proved to be a polyploid taxon by comparing the material known to Linné with recent cytologically examined collections. As lectotype has been proposed the figure of the species in the „Hortus Elthamensis“ (t. 224 f. 291) by Dillenius (plants from the Argun river). Seed imports ofScapiflora taxa from Siberia and neighbouring territories have happened several times during the 18th and 19th century. But only one diploid species — mostly erroneously calledP. „nudicaule“ (Iceland Poppy), too — has been more widely distributed in the gardens. On morphological and cytological reasons these plants must be included inP. croceum; spontaneous strains from the Altai mountains, from where the species had been originally described, are comparable in all essential characters to the cultivated ornamental plants. Since the last decades of the 19th century a remarkable variability especially of flower colour types has been selected in the cultivation which surpasses the colour variation of the wild taxa of the whole sectionScapiflora.
