Abstract

Repeated passage ofMycobacterium avium and of Battey bacilli(M. intracellulare) at elevated temperatures does not appear to lead to selection of strains with tolerance to higher temperature.M. avium has weaker arylsulfatase and nitrite reducing activity than the Battey bacillus, and these activities are not stimulated at elevated temperatures. This is in contrast to observations of Fromanet al. that high temperatures modify phage susceptibility and pathogenicity of organisms in this complex.
