Abstract
A study was made of the lipids of mycobacteria separated from homogenates of infected animal tissue by differential centrifugation. By means of chromatography and infrared spectroscopy, phthiocerol dimycocerosate and mycolic acid were detected in the lipids ofM. bovis grownin vivo. Comparison of the relative amounts of these lipids in organisms grownin vivo andin vitro indicates that they are present in about the same concentration. Mycolic acid was also detected in the lipids ofM. paratuberculosis separated from infected tissue. No specific lipids were detected inM. avium harvested from spleens and livers of infected chickens.
