Abstract
Sensitization to avian PPD is very frequently found in man and cattle in South Africa. Atypical mycobacteria of Group III are the cause of lymphadenitis in pigs. The occurrence of the same atypicals freely in nature, and their isolation from man and cattle are an indication of their great variability. Using the method for dissociation of mycobacteria developed at the Trudeau Institute, 30 variants were cultured from 34 strains of Groups II, III and IV. 15 strains were dissociated into smooth and rough variants and 13 strains produced stable pigmented and non-pigmented variants.
