The variation in biochemical reactivity of rough and smooth variants of mycobacteria

Abstract

Investigation has shown that different biochemical reactions may be observed for rough and smooth colony forms of the same organism. This may account in part of discrepant biochemical results reported for the same organism by different investigators. For purposes of taxonomy, it is recommended that the biochemical reactions of both the mixed and separated, purified colony forms be studied. In this way biochemical variations associated with different colony forms might signal the need for the taxonomic designation “variety”.
