Anatomical review of the lymph nodes of the human mediastinum

Summary

The anatomy of the lymph nodes of the human mediastinum was studied in 984 cases over a period of 17 years. Some findings in past publications were confirmed, but new data on nomenclature and location were obtained. Further, it has been possible to describe more clearly some groups and chains that are poorly defined in the classic literature, in the Nomina Anatomica and by more recent authors. Lymph gland groups have been found which have not apparently been previously described, so that the author proposes a new topographic division of the mediastinum which allows a more accurate localisation within the thoracic cavity. Twelve paired lymph node centres are defined (11 symmetric, one asymetric) and one single centre.

Résumé

Une révision anatomique a été réalisée après 17 ans de travail et de recherche de tous les lymphonœuds retrouvés dans le médiastin humain à partir de 984 dissections cadavériques. Cela nous a permis de confirmer certains des travaux classiques. Dans d'autres cas, de nouvelles bases descriptives et terminologiques ont été proposées. En plus, des clarifications ou modifications de certaines chaînes ou groupe mal définis par les classiques, ou par la Nomenclature Internationale ou par les nombreux auteurs qui nous ont précédés, ont été ajoutées. De nombreux lymphocentres jusqu'alors inconnus ont été décrits. L'auteur propose une nouvelle conception de la division du médiastin qui diffère de celle des classiques et de la Nomenclature Internationale, permettant une approche topographique parfaite des lymphonœuds de la cavité thoracique. Il décrit l'existence de 25 lymphocentres bien définis: 12 sont pairs dont 11 symétriques (dans le plan médiastinal de chaque hémithorax), et un asymétrique (dans un plan médiastinal différent); un lymphocentre médiastinal principal est impair.
