Additional information

In this paper Filatov has presented general experimental data on the relation of reaction pressure distribution and of pile displacement to horizontal load and rigidity of the pile. It may be used in developing a strict method for designing piles for horizontal loads. At the same time we should warn against direct transfer of these results to natural conditions. Even with proper use of similarity methods, experiments with models cannot reflect, for example, such essential factors as the effect of soil weight, change in the previous stress-strain state of the soil due to driving the pile, and so forth — Editor's note.
