Summary
The post-effect and the effect of oxygen on the degradation of PMMA exposed to60Co-γ-rays were studied. The radiation-induced scissions of the main chain are not affected by oxygen. Mixtures of PMMA and several aromatic additives (benzene, naphthalene, diphenyl, anthracene, phenanthrene, pyrene, and benz(α)anthracene) were irradiated. The degradation was measured by means of solution viscosity. The additives decrease the yield of fractures which is constant over a dose range of 0–60 Mrad.
A radiation protection factor was defined. Its concentration dependence was derived by means of reaction kinetics and verified by measurements. Accordingly, at low concentrations the radiation protection factor is proportional to the concentration. A molar protection coefficient was also introduced, which is increasing with the resonance energy of the additives. The results are consistent with the view that the protective effect is due to transfer of excitation energy to the additives and to their electron scavenging.
