Oxidation of Fe(II) in a strongly acidic medium. Platinum catalysts may become important in processing of inorganic ions?

Abstract

Pt catalysts were shown to provide principally new possibilities for ferrous sulfate to be smoothly oxidized with molecular oxygen. The catalytic reaction proceeds with molecular oxygen. The catalytic reaction proceeds with a high rate and easily goes to completion even at a low concentration of Fe(II), high acidity and high ionic strength of the reaction mixture, when attempts to carry out the process effectively by other means failed. It is concluded that more extensive application of catalysts with platinum group metals in inorganic redox processes might be fruitful.
