Isolation of highly purified chondrocytes

  • Published:
Journal of tissue culture methods

Summary

A procedure for isolation of a pure population of chondrocytes by the double digestion method using collagenase has been developed. After the first treatment with collagenase, the contaminant tissues were dissociated to single cells because they were located only on the surface of the cartilage. One day after inoculation, these cells as well as dissociated chondrocytes have attached to culture dishes and the remaining cartilage fragments floating in the culture medium were of a purer population of chondrocytes. The second treatment of these fragments with collagenase provided a highly purified population of chondrocytes.
