Abstract
Transrectal needle biopsy with subsequent cytological study described by Franzén is a routine diagnostic procedure in suspected prostatic carcinoma and may be employed in mass screening tests for the early detection of cancer. With adequate experience of the examiner, it equals histological study of biopsy material in its diagnostic value, though occasionally it may require the additional evidence of histology. In view of the frequency of multilocular tumours, the material for cytological study should be obtained from several sites of the prostate. The question whether the expected increase in the number of cases detected in the early stage of tumour has any therapeutic implications, whether, for instance, it is likely to widen the indications for radical prostatectomy, can be only clarified in the light of further observations.
