Late results of cystectomy in carcinoma of the urinary bladder

Abstract

Late results of cystectomy in carcinoma of the urinary bladder are analysed in 57 patients operated on since 1965. A 5-year cure was achieved in 28 per cent of the cases. The chances for recovery showed a dependence upon the stage of the tumour. 20 per cent of the failures are accounted for by ureterosigmoidostomy. Recurrences or metastases occurred in 50–60 per cent of the fatal cases. The indications for cystectomy are clearly differentiated from the indications for other forms of treatment for cancer of the urinary bladder. The removal of the bladder in toto is essential with regard to local recurrences. Additional radiologic treatment by means of supervoltage rays or telecobalt as well as an optimum kind of urinary derivation may improve the late results of cystectomy.
