Renal cystography

A valuable method of differentiating cysts from tumors

Abstract

Renal cystography in selected cases of large avascular space occupying lesions of the kidney is recommended as a useful aid in the definite differential diagnosis between renal cyst and tumor. It was performed in 31 patients. In 23 patients clear fluid was obtained, a smooth outline of the cyst wall was demonstrated and no exploration performed. Puncture was unsuccessful in four cases and four masses were diagnosed as tumors when bloody or cloudy fluid was aspirated. Follow-up showed decreased size in four and disappearence of the cysts in three of the punctured patients (one proven by autopsy). More frequent use of this easy procedure may prevent many unnecessary explorations of the kidney for renal cysts, especially in patients who are poor surgical risks.
