Changes in renal function associated with operations

Abstract

As demonstrated in more than 800 patients there were practically no postoperative changes in nonprotein nitrogen, serum creatinine, urea nitrogen and creatinine ratio and creatinine clearance and less marked ones in water and salt retention than earlier assumed. A marked sodium retention is a common postoperative complication. Nonprotein nitrogen and serum creatinine increase and creatinine clearance falls relatively frequently after operations in patients with marked chronic renal failure. Thus, they are presumably not primarily due to postoperative changes in the electrolyte metabolism. An increased susceptibility to damage of kidneys with significantly reduced function seems to be more important.
