Continuous recording of the X-ray diffraction pattern during catalysis: Methanol on molybdenum trioxide

Abstract

Using a modified Guinier-Lenne camera, the X-ray diffraction pattern of a solid catalyst at work was continuously recorded on a photographic film. During methanol catalysis on a high area orthorhombic MoO3 sample, no phase change is observed in the presence of oxygen at 200 °C (30 h); under the same conditons, but without oxygen, MoO3 is converted within 2 h to the bronze HxMoO3 (x=0.6).

Используя модифицированную камеру Гуйнер-Ленна, рентгено-диффрактограмма твердого катализатора в ходе работы была непрерывно регистрирована на фотопленке. При катализе окисления метанола на больщих поверхностях образцов орторомбической MoO3 не наблюдалось какого-либо изменения фазы в присутствии кислорода и при 200 °C (30 часов); при тех же условиях, но в отсуствии кислорода MoO3 превращается в бронзу HxMoO3(x=0,6) в течение 2 часов.
