Abstract
The thermal treatment of Pt foil model catalysts under UHV conditions leads to an enhanced activity for H2-D2 exchange. For the enhanced activity, the UHV atmosphere, a temperature of 1073 K and a Cl-impurity are essential. This was identical with the surface roughening behavior of Pt foils upon the UHV treament reported previously (Ref. [7]). These results indicate that the UHV treatment brought about a roughening of the surface and the rough surface resulted in an enhanced activity.
