Abstract

Complex formation of H2PtCl6 and SnCl2 in the presence of HCl in acetone has been studied quantitatively by using Mössbauer spectroscopy. It has been revealed that Pt(IV) is rapidly reduced by Sn(II) to Pt(II) and with time the product complex [PtCl2(SnCl3)2]n− transforms into a compound with Pt∶Sn=1∶1 ratio that, in turn, transforms to metallic platinum and Sn(IV). In these conditions no formation of stable Pt(O) clusters was observed.
