Abstract
In the context of recent theoretical work on random anisotropy in Heisenberg-like spin systems, we have searched for possible firstorder effects at the ferromagnetic transition in polycrystalline Fe1−xVx, 0<x<0.147. We find no such effects, or any intrinsic rounding of the transition. The occurrence of normal second order behavior suggests that we are in a region of the phase diagram for which random or coherent anisotropy does not produce first order behavior. We conjecture that in this caseFeV may have critical exponents that differ from those of pure Fe.
