Summary
Experiences of various authors point to the central importance of the gastrointestinal tract in shock. To study this problem further, sterile homogenates of gut wall, gut content, liver, kidney and serum of portal vein blood of 40 burned rabbits (an equal number of unburned animals serving as controls) were tested for their toxic effect (lethality and pathological-anatomical changes of the gut) by i.p. injection into a total of 1150 white Carworth-mice.
Our results demonstrate two different toxic factors which are significantly increased in the gut of shocked animals: one factor is found mainly in the gut content and is probably identical with bacterial endotoxin, whereas the second toxic factor is located in the gut wall itself and shows no relationship to endotoxin.
