Summary
In this second of three presentations upon the mouth-breathing syndrome, the reciprocal action between respiration and the vertebral column is discussed. Irregularities of spine — lordosis and kypho-scoliosis — reduce the vital capacity and lead to oxygen deficiency. Respiratory disturbances lead not only to excessive use of the diaphragm but also additional strain upon the auxiliary respiratory muscles, specially in the shoulder, neck, and thoracic regions. The Gnatho-Vertebral-Syndrom(Bahnemann) is the manifestation of the functional head-denture-neck unity. Chronic tonsilitis is a decisive factor in mouth breathing, which blocks the cervical vertebra, causing disturbances of the whole spinal function. This phenomenon has far-reaching consequences in the patient.
