Summary

Alternaria solani causing a severe leaf spot disease ofSolanum melongena L. was able to metabolize a variety of nitrogen compounds when grown in a chemically defined medium in surface culture. The amount of growth varied with the nitrogen source. Peptone produced the greatest growth of the fungus. Ammonium compounds were found to be moderately effective for growth, but poor for the formation of the spores.
