Summary
The reactivity of arterial blood pressure, portal vein pressure, mesenteric vein pressure, mesenteric flow and cardiac output to injections of vasopressin and octapressin has been investigated in 20 dogs.
-
1.
There has been no difference between the effect caused by vasopressin and octapressin as regards to total peripheral and intestinal circulation by a given dose of 0,25 U/kg.
-
2.
An injection of 0,5 U/kg octapressin was followed by a significantly lower depression of mesenteric blood flow and cardiac output. Simultaneously, however, there has also been a lesser decrease of pressure in the portal and mesenteric veins.
-
3.
These differences also exist if vasopressin or octapressin has been injected after previous hemorrhage.
-
4.
In the treatment of bleeding oesophageal varices octapressin therefore should be used preferably. The therapeutic effectivness is being stressed by our experimental results as well as the lesser side effects (antidiuresis/anoxic rhythm disturbances) published in the literature.
