Summary

An asporogenous, non-filamentous, black pigmented yeast-like fungus, isolated from paint scrapings, was characterized and identified as a heretofore undescribed species of the genusCryptococcus. Because of its jet-black pigmentation, the nameCryptococcus nigricans was proposed.
