Summary

Determination of water requirements in grain storage fungi.

The behaviour of 13 fungi is examined at 22° C, in different hydrous conditions (65 to 100 % R.H.). Specific linear growths correspond with the following groups:

  • hygrophilic species (Epicoccum nigrum, Mucor circinelloides, Trichothecium roseum) the optimum growth of which is 100 % R.H.

  • mesophilic species (Alternaria tenuissima, Cladosporium clado-sporioides, Penicillium cyclopium, P. spinulosum) the optimum is 95 to 100 % R.H.

  • xerophilic species (Aspergillus conicus, A. echinulatus, A. repens, A. restrictus, A. versicolor, Hemispora stellata) with optimum growth below 95 % R.H.

Concepts of xerophily, xerotolerance and osmophily are discussed.
