Direct plate isolation method for cryptococcus neoformans from the soil

Summary

An in vitro technique was developed for the isolation ofCryptococcus sp. from soil. Cycloheximide was sused to suppress the growth of many of the saprophytic fungi, includingCryptococcus sp. cells. These cells are then selectively recovered by neutralizing the effect of the cycloheximide, using a hydrolysis product of protein (usually peptone) to adsorb the antibiotic off the walls, allowing the cells to grow.
