Summary
A cutaneous, heterologous GVHR in irradiated mice was induced by injecting rat-lymphocytes. The reaction displays the same characteristics as those described for homologous GVHR.
Intensity and duration of the reaction depend on the irradiation of the host and on the other hand on the quality and quantity of the injected rat-cells.
The reaction could be modified by influencing selectively the host or the graft with antimouselymphocytic serum (AMLS) or antiratlymphocytic serum (ARLS). AMLS increased and prolonged the reaction, ARLS suppressed it.
The mechanism of the reaction was characterized as follows: (1) It is a strictly onedirectional GVHR and (2) the fade out is caused by the immunological recovery of the host.
The qualitative influence of AMLS or ARLS may offer a new method for the standardisation of ALS.
