Summary
Two groups of excised pig livers were perfused by pump oxygenator technique under physiologic conditions. Prior to perfusion the livers of the first group were washed free of their own blood and heterologous human conserved blood was used to prime the circuit. In the second group livers were removed after the death of the animal and perfused with homologous pig blood. In both groups studies of blood pH, oxygen consumption, bile flow, plasma haemoglobin, LDH, SGPT, BSP and131I-bengal rose clearance indicated that a more or less significant function of the excised pig liver could be obtained. The results were better in the group of experiments in which homologous blood was used. The clinical use of heterologous or homologous liver perfusion might be mooted in patients with certain forms of liver cirrhosis, liver intoxication, or as a temporary support in liver transplantation.
