The value of computerized tomography in the diagnosis of cerebellar atrophy

Abstract

Computerized tomography was performed in 31 patients presenting clinical signs of cerebellar degeneration. CT abnormalities consistent with cerebellar atrophy were found in all cases but one. Specific patterns of abnormality were found in olivo-ponto-cerebellar degeneration and in alcoholic atrophy. The CT findings in spino-cerebellar degeneration were varied, ranging from severe diffuse cerebellar atrophy to normality, possibly according to age and duration of symptoms.

Sommario

31 pazienti con segni clinici di un processo degenerativo cerebellare sono stati sottoposti a tomografia computerizzata. In tutti i casi eccetto uno sono state ravvisate alterazioni tomodensitometriche compatibili con la diagnosi di atrofia cerebellare. Specifici pattern di alterazioni sono stati riscontrati nell'atrofia olivo-ponto-cerebellare e nell'atrofia cerebellare degli alcolisti cronici. I rilievi tomodensitometrici nei soggetti con degenerazione spinocerebellare non sono stati omogenei, variando da un quadro di atrofia cerebellare diffusa di marcata entità ad un quadro di normalità, e sono apparsi in probabile correlazione con l'età dei pazienti e la durata della sintomatologia.
