On six cases of radiation meningiomas from the same community

Abstract

The article deals with 6 patients operated on for meningioma many years after they had undergone X-ray therapy because of an epidemic of tinea capitis in their community. One of the patients developed another meningioma 13 years after the operation. A causal connexion between radiation and tumors is supported by the patient linkage and by the similarity of tumor type, site and latency (36.14 ± 7.51 years).

L'articolo descrive 6 casi di pazienti con meningioma, che anni prima erano stati irradiati al cuoio capelluto a causa di un'epidemia di “tinea capitis” nell'orfanotrofio dove erano alloggiati. Uno dei pazienti presentò un nuovo meningioma 13 anni dopo il primo intervento. L'associazione fra questi soggetti, la somiglianza del tipo di tumore, della sede e delle latenze (anni 36, 14 ± 7,51) dimostrano un nesso di causalità fra l'irradiazione e l'oncogenesi. Questa osservazione è la prima del suo genere in letteratura.
