Abstract
Calculations are presented of bistable characteristics occurring on reflection from Fabry-Perot and distributed feedback laser amplifiers. Depending on the drive current and wavelength detuning, a variety of non-linear and bistable behaviour can be expected, including a new form of hysteresis loop not hitherto widely discussed. Switching powers and speeds are calculated for 1.5 μm InGaAsP amplifiers, and some potential applications for these effects are explored.
