Transcutaneous microscopy and argon laser treatment of Port Wine Stains

Abstract

The range of abnormality present in the blood vessels of Port Wine Stains (PWS) has been investigated using the transcutaneous microscope. Although individual lesions show considerable variation in their structure, it is proposed that the lesions can be classified on the basis of the nature of the vascular abnormality present. The microscope can also be used to inspect treated lesions and provide an explanation of the quality of the result of laser irradiation. It is suggested that this technique makes a useful contribution to improving both the initial assessment of the patient and the outcome of treatment.
