Summary
The effectiveness of fluorine in caries prophylaxis is generally recognized. However, until now little attention has been given to the problem of its toxicity to the human organism and to the Thyroid in particular. An antagonism of fluorine and iodine has usually been acknowledged without the support of modern Thyroid function tests (radioactive iodine uptake, blood protein-bound iodine). To investigate this problem we gave individuals with normal Thyroid function considerably higher doses of fluorine than that usually considered optimum for caries prophylaxis, over an extended length of time. Basal metabolism, protein-bound iodine (PBI), I-131 -uptake and serum cholesterol were regularly determined. Furthermore, we treated rats which had been subjected to special diets (low iodine; high calcium etc.) with varying amounts of fluorine to determine its effect on the Thyroid and the organism as a whole. No specific action of the investigated fluorine dosis on the Thyroid were revealed by either the clinical or animal experiments. Several methods for the general prophylaxis of dental caries with fluorine are suggested and their practicability in Switzerland are discussed.
