Summary
The adhesion of ice grown on different surfaces is investigated by means of a static shearing test. 300 samples all made at similar conditions are tested. The adhesion on clean metal surfaces is found to be 8 kg*/cm2; it is therefore of about the same magnitude as the shearing stress of ice. A surface-film of silicone grease reduces the adhesion to one half. The apparent shearing stress of ice is also diminished by the same amount. Both effects are attributed to a reduction of the true surface.
