Summary
Using the hemolysis test and distribution studies of radioactive dl-α-tocopherol in the rat, the influence of the feeding of linoleio acid on the requirement for vitamin E was investigated:
-
1.
Linoleic acid reduces the uptake of dl-α-tocopherol from the intestine. The design of the experiments, however, does not allow to decide whether linoleic acid influences the absorption of dl-α-tocopherol or decreases the uptake by destruction of the vitamin in the intestine.
-
2.
Linoleic acid, however, also increases the requirement for dl-α-tocopherol under conditions which exclude any influence of linoleic acid on the uptake of vitamin E from the intestine. This increase of the vitamin E requirement in the rat amounts to about 0.5 mg of dl-α-tocopheryl acetate per gram of linoleic acid.
