Summary
Pre-selected “sexual” and “apomictic” clones ofPoa pratensis as well as F1 hybrids betweenLolium andFestuca species were used in these studies. The following results were obtained:
-
1.
Checking the share of polyembryonic seeds in a progeny is not a useful test inP. pratensis for estimating the rate of apomictic seed formation.
-
2.
The phenotypic comparison between mother plants and progenies could be supported effectively by analysing isoenzymes (esterase and peroxidase).
-
3.
Application of 2,4,5-T to the leaves of a “sexual” clone increased, whereas application of 4-CPA and GA3 to the roots of an “apomictic” clone decreased the degree of apomixis.
-
4.
A decrease of the degree of apomixis was caused in one “apomictic” clone by higher temperatures, in another one by lower temperatures, both in connection, with short-day conditions.
-
5.
Increased fertility was observed in some cases after application of NAA and GA3 to the roots of low-fertile interspecificFestuca hybrids, but decreased fertility in some other cases, on the other hand, by application of NAA and BAP. Further studies are necessary for deciding whether the increased fertility was caused by induced apomictic seed development.
-
6.
In completely sterileLolium-Festuca hybrids, the treatments with different effectors were unsuccessful in inducing seed-set. Treatments with various effectors gave specific effects, dependent on the idiotyp. Because of the rather low number of individuals which could be studied, however, the findings cannot be generalized without reservation.
