Abstract
The mantle of fresh water lamellibranchs is responsible for the deposition of calcium in the shell.

1.
At least 2 calcium pools can be shown to occur in this tissue. The first corresponds to an ionised form, the second to a bound form which may be separated by the centrifugation of a homogenate.
-
2.
Exchanges between these 2 compartments are studied. The variations of pH in homogenates as a result of changes in the partial pressure of CO2 cannot entirely explain calcium translocation from one pool to the other. These exchanges, which are inhibited in the presence of diamox, are controlled by carbonic anhydrase.

The physiological role of this mechanism is discussed.
