Summary
Electrophoresis variability was examined in 66 cultivars ofCucumis melo representing 35 Spanish provinces to determine the genetic variation within cultivars, genetic differentiation between cultivars and relationships between provinces. The survey defined 15 enzyme-codingloci among which the total number of alloenzymes was 22. Progeny tests conducted for 6 polymorphicloci confirmed their monogenic nature.
Genetic variation within cultivars was measured by the proportion of polymorphicloci, which ranges from 0–0.27, and by the frequency of heterozygosity perlocus, which ranges from 0–0.10. Genetic differentiation between provinces was estimated byNei's genetic distance, D, and the range is from 0.01 to 0.26. The average value of D for all pairwise comparisons is 0.07±0.01; meaning that on average about one allelic substitution per every 14loci exist between any two Spanish provinces.
The results show that:
-
(a)
almost 75% of the genome remains constant in all Spanish cultivars studied, and these provided a good genetic base for common features of all Spanish melons;
-
(b)
melons from populations which differ in alloenzyme composition usually have distinctive morphological features;
-
(c)
the variant alloenzymes are widespread throughout the country;
-
(d)
the distribution of these variants is not random and may reflect some regional specialization;
-
(e)
on average, more polymorphism is present along the coast than in the interior.
The Spanish cultivars seem to have a common origin and distinctive characteristics, without evidence of recent introgression with foreign melons despite considerable opportunities for interchange within Iberia. Limited regional specializations are also present. In this work, collections from some provinces have been grouped together according to their alloenzyme composition.
-
(a)
in allen untersuchten spanischen Sorten fast 75% des Genoms konstant bleiben, diese ergeben eine gute Grundlage für gemeinsame Merkmale aller spanischen Melonen;
-
(b)
Melonen aus Populationen, die sich in ihrer Alloenzymzusammensetzung unterscheiden, gewöhnlich charakteristische Merkmale besitzen;
-
(c)
die Varianten Alloenzyme im Lande weit verbreitet sind;
-
(d)
die Verteilung dieser Varianten nicht zufällig ist; sie kann eine gewisse regionale Spezialisierung widerspiegeln;
-
(e)
-
(а)
во всех исследованн ых испанских сортах п очти 75% генома осталтся постоянным; на основа нии этого можно приня ть значительную общнос ть признаков всех испан ских дынь;
-
(б)
популяции дынь, разл ичающихся по составу их аллоэнзимов, обыкнов енно обладают и характерн ыми морфологическим и признаками;
-
(в)
изменчивость аллоэ нзимов широко распро странена по всей стране;
-
(г)
распределение этой изменчивости не случ айно; оно может отражать некоторую региональ ную специализацию;
-
(д)
