Abstract
The subcutaneous injection of dilute solutions of lead acetate in mice, rats, rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters and chickens, was followed by calcification around the injection site. In spite of the variations in the number of mast cells present at the injection site in these different animals, marked macroscopic calcification occurred. The initial reaction is considered as a combination of the injected lead ions with collagen fibres. This is followed by an influx of calcium and phosphate ions from locally dilated capillaries followed by calcification. The role of the mast cell is considered to be that of dilating local small blood vessels associated with release of their granules. In the fowl, however, while the sequence of events was similar, mast cells were not seen around the injection site. Other vasodilators may, therefore, be involved in the process.
