The acute and chronic effects of exercise on the latent period of the gastrocnemius muscle in man

Conclusions

The following conclusions are drawn from the data presented:

  1. 1.

The mean latent time of the intact gastrocnemius muscle is .0176±.0003 sec. for the trained subject, and .0177±.0005 sec. for the untrained.

  2. 2.

On the basis of these figures physical training, as defined in this study, has no effect on the latent time of the intact gastrocnemius muscle.

  3. 3.

Small amounts of exercise have a definite tendency toward a decrease in the latent time of the gastrocnemius muscle in the majority of cases. In some instances, however, 50 knee-bends are severe enough to produce the onset of fatigue in the muscle.
