It is interesting, in light of recent researches by Margaret Switten and Linda Paterson (Margaret Switten, “The Poet as Knight,” Kentucky Foreign Language Conference, Lexington, KY, April 27, 1984) that Aimeric distinguishes betweentrobador andcavalier in this stanza. Switten has observed that by 1180, the termcavalier was used to refer to the poet-lover, and that in the fourteenth-century manuscript M, where the troubadourvidas are accompanied by illustrations, all the troubadours are presented as knights.
