Summary
The teratogenic effect of 2,4,5-T proved in lab animalsin the United States in 1969, has to be attributed to an impurification of 30 ppm of the highly toxic 2,3,6,7-Tetrachloro-dibenzo-para-dioxin. The sample tested originated from a factory which stopped 2,4,5-T-production already years ago. The manufacturers today can guarantee that the dioxin content of the technical 2,4,5-T-acid is not higher than 0,1 ppm. Therefore, for men, domesticated animals, and wildlife, no danger should occur from dioxin residues resulting from 2,4,5-T-uses in agriculture and forests. The conditions of our today's practice of use can exclude an endangering.
Due to the latest findings also high oral dosis of 2,4,5-T with a dioxin content not higher than 0,1 ppm, can cause a teratogenic effect in case the lab animals are extremely susceptible. The no effect level of 2,4,5-T in NMRI-mice was proved to be 20 mg/kg/day. There are no indications that man is belonging to the species which are 2,4,5-T-susceptible. The relatively low persistence of 2,4,5,-T is not allowing the conclusion that the herbicide in our food or in the environment is reaching a contaminating effect for men, domesticated animals, fur-bearing animals or wild-fowl.
Concerning the toxicological aspects, at the moment there is no fundamental reason for suspension of the use of 2,4,5-T-preparations officially approved and recommended in agriculture and forests.
The BRD-Bundesrat came to the conclusion (9. 7. 71) to allow the use of 2,4,5-T-preparations in general (agriculture, forests, park and garden lawns), except aerial sprayings which can be done only with the special permission of the regional officials concerned.
