Summary
The article gives a survey of the present knowledge on sleep disturbances caused by noise, and contains some proposals for measures to be taken by public authorities.
The conditions under which a night of sleep takes place are shortly described; the parts played by the intensity of noise, the various stages of sleep and the individual variables are mentioned. As a matter of fact, noise influences sleep only relatively and not absolutely. Noise affects light and sometimes paradoxical sleep more than deep sleep, elderly people are more easily awakened than children, etc.
Some statistics are given as to the consumption of ear plugs, which seems to be an effective indicator of annoyance caused by noise.
Finally, it is shown that habituation to nocturnal noise is very doubtful (one can get used to annoyance but not to noise), and an attempt is made to determine individual and social consequences which nocturnal noise may provoke.
