Summary
A comparison was made between rectangular stainless steel wires and nickel titanium wires of the same cross section by a torsion test. The testing was performed by stepwise twisting of the wires to increasing values of torsion. The resulting momentum (force) and permanent angulation (torque) were recorded. Wires with different cross-sectional dimensions were tested and for Nitinol wires the effect of gaugelength was examined. The results showed that the stainless steel wire was five times stiffer than the corresponding Nitinol wire. The elastic range with respect to the permanent angulation (torque) was approximately double that of stainless steel. Nitinol is fundamentally different from stainless steel wire: Due to a lower modulus of elasticity Nitinol wire shows a large elastic working range without being limited too much in its plastic behaviour. For clinical use it is possible to apply adequate torque, provided a minimum gauge length of 3 mm is used. Nitinol allows the application of weak continuous forces over a long period.
