Abstract

On biological control of Cardaria draba (L.) Desv. Studies on the insects fauna of the weed with special regard to Colaphellus hoefti Men (Col., Chrysomelidae)

A survey for phytophagous insects attackingCardaria draba in the region of Meshed (north-eastern Iran) showed that adults and larvae of the ChrysomelidColaphellus hoefti Men are capable of skeletonizing young plants and preventing them from flowering. Adults were found on the plants from early March to early May. Eggs are deposited in early spring into cracks of the soils in the vicinity of young individuals ofC. draba. the larvae hatch during the second half of March and feed in group on the immatureCardaria. Pupation takes place from mid-April onwards. From mid-May on neither larvae nor adults are present on theCardaria plants. Screening tests with newly emerged larvae, field-collected larvae and adults indicated that the leaves ofBrassica sp.,Raphanus sp. andCapsella sp. are readily accepted. HenceC. hoefti cannot be considered as a candidate for the biological control ofC. draba

At one locality near Meshed leaves and flowers ofC. draba were heavily deformed by anot as yet identified agent. Further studies on this gall-maker seem worthwhile.
