Summary

The Mediterranean is an important center of diversity for several families of cultivated plants: Leguminosae, Labiatae, Compositae, Umbelliferae, Cruciferae, Chenopodiaceae, etc.

The diversity of 53 families present in the Mediterranean and that of the most important ones is discussed in relation also to other gene centers.

Some crops, like wheat, maize, etc., have been highly domesticated and are suffering genetic erosion while some others, like chickpea, grass pea, etc., are still waiting for further domestication. The diversity of few crops important for the Mediterranean agriculture is discussed and, whenever possible, compared with other gene centers.
